If everyone in your family is on an individual mobile plan, you want to bundle them to save money by making the switch to a family mobile plan. These plans can decrease your combined mobile spending, make sharing data easier and keep them tidy in a single bill.

While there aren't too many shared plans in the Australian market, the ones on offer can either keep your costs down or offer perks like data gifting, pooling or sharing to help you make the most of monthly data allowances.

Expert tip: Also consider bundling and data sharing

When it comes to saving money with family discounts, you don't necessarily have to go with a "family plan". You can also make use of mobile and internet bundles, or data gifting (not to be confused with data sharing).

Some providers let you bundle multiple extra services to your internet plan, with increasing savings the more you add. The per-service discounts aren't huge, but can potentially add up to a moderate amount each month. Superloop and Exetel are two providers who bundle like this.

With data gifting, one or two people can have a larger plan, with everyone else on something cheaper. Whoever has data to spare can manually give some of it with the others, as long as you're all with the same provider and all plans are eligible for gifting.

This works particularly well if your mobile plan also has data banking – a feature that stores your unused data each month.

Family mobile plans with Optus

Optus' four-SIM Family Plan is a practical option for families looking for a convenient way to bundle both their data and their bills. Four SIMs are bundled under one plan with 320GB of data shared between them. The plan is $165 per month, which works out to $41.25 per SIM.

If you need more than four SIMs, Optus allows customers to add up to four extra for $29 each per month. Adding these SIMs doesn't add extra data to the family plan, however.

This plan also includes Optus Pause, for parents who want to keep their kids off their phones at the touch of a button, and a discount off Optus Sport ($9.99 per month for Optus customers compared to the usual price of $24.99 per month). Optus Family Plans allow customers to bring their own handset or choose a brand-new device and pay it off. Each SIM card can be paired with a new device.

Alternatively, all Optus postpaid mobile plans feature data sharing. This is where every data allowance on your account is put into one big pool. While this can be helpful, it does also mean one person could use all the data, leaving little or nothing for anyone else. You may need to regularly monitor everyone's data usage, at least while you all get used to it.

Family mobile plans with Vodafone

For customers opting for Vodafone mobile bundles, this telco offers discounts of up to 20% off plan fees for the more postpaid SIMs you have on one account.

This includes both mobile and mobile broadband plans. Data sharing means each plan's data is pooled together, letting everyone draw from one data pool.

To experience the benefits of a Telstra family plan, customers first need to be on either its Essential Upfront plan or better.

The Essential Upfront plan will set you back $52 per month (for 180GB) or you can opt for the Premium plan for $99 per month (for 300GB), depending on how much data you need.

Telstra's Mobile Bundle Plan will set you back $52 per month for unlimited calls and texts and 25GB of data.

If you just want data, Telstra offers a $10 per month mobile broadband Data Bundle Plan with 10GB. For those who need an additional data-only SIM for a secondary device like a tablet, this is still a great money-saving option.

Up to five Bundle plans can be added to a single Telstra account.

Bundle plans and all Telstra Upfront plans allow data sharing for up to 20 plans on the same account.

These plans also include access to Telstra’s 5G network. Upfront plans are also contract-free, but as the name suggests, you will need to pay for your Upfront plan in advance. This makes them similar to prepaid plans.

Family mobile plans with ALDI Mobile

ALDI Mobile continues to deliver the goods by offering generous family mobile phone plans of its own. ALDI Mobile's bundling options for families allow customers to connect up to six services on one account with a 30-day expiry – so say goodbye to that pesky 28-day turnaround.

Data gifting with Belong

While Belong doesn't offer family-specific mobile plans, all of its plans allow you to gift data to other Belong customers.

Customers can gift data in 1GB increments, provided they have at least 1.3GB of data and the recipient is either an active Belong mobile or data plan customer. Customers can only gift data five times per billing month, so we recommend using them wisely.

This is still worth considering, especially if you have one of those families where mum and dad won't use their data but the teenagers certainly will. Belong is also on the Telstra wholesale network, so for those in regional areas without the budget to splash out on a Telstra family plan, this is an affordable alternative.

An added bonus is infinite data banking. Belong will save all your unused data each month, so you can slowly build up a gigabyte hoard to generously bestow upon friends and family, as long as they also have a mobile plan with Belong.

Data gifting with Tangerine Telecom

On Tangerine Telecom SIM-only plans, customers can gift part of their standard monthly data to other Tangerine mobile customers.

Gifting is capped at 50% of the customer's standard SIM-only plan's monthly data allowance, rounded up to the nearest GB, per billing period. Customers must also gift a minimum amount of 1GB per transaction.

This data gifting doesn't apply to bonus data from special promos, and any gifted data cannot be regifted. Tangerine operates on the Telstra network.

Data gifting with More Mobile

More Mobile's data gifting works the same as Tangerine's. Customers can gift data to other More Mobile SIM-only customers provided they gift data in 1GB increments and the gift doesn't exceed 50% of their plan's standard monthly data allowance. You can't regift any gifted data, nor can you gift bonus data received from a special offer or promo.

Gifting can be done via the More Self Care Portal. More operates on the Telstra network.

Data gifting with Everyday Mobile

Everyday Mobile, formerly known as Woolworths Mobile, offers no-contract plans with data gifting on both its prepaid and postpaid plans.

Regardless of what plan you're on, you can gift up to 50% of your included data in 1GB increments to any other Everyday Mobile customer. If you forget to gift your data, any unused data rolls over into a data bank (with a maximum capacity of 1,000GB on postpaid plans and 500GB on prepaid plans) for future use.

Additional perks include 10% off grocery shopping once per month. This is capped at a saving of $50 per month. Everyday Mobile is a Telstra network provider.
