HMD's latest Nokia throwback phone launches in Australia next week

HMD Skyline

HMD's latest phone revives a classic Nokia design, but probably in the way you're thinking. While HMD has been responsible for bringing back devices like 8110 and 3110 as 4G dumb phones, its latest handset is a modern take on the design used by the Lumia 920.

The Lumia 920 was perhaps Nokia's most distinctive Windows Phone, and the HMD Skyline updates it by subtracting bezel and adding screen. As with other HMD phones, the Skyline can be repaired without the need for a professional, and parts will be available for order through iFixit.

The HMD Skyline will be available in Australia from August 28, priced at $899, through retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Amazon, and Harvey Norman.

Key specifications for the HMD Skyline include a 6.55-inch display 1080p+ display with a 144Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 processor, 256GB of expandable storage, 12GB of RAM, and a 4,600mAh battery. On the photo front, the phone Skyline has a 108MP primary camera, 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP selfie camera.

As an $899 phone, the Skyline also has a few premium trimmings like eSIM support and Qi2 Wireless Charging. The phone is however only rated IP54. This means it's splash-resistant, rather than fully submergible.

One interesting feature coming in late September is a Digital Detox mode. The main benefit is blocking all social media notifications until you're ready for them.

The Skyline will get two years of operating system upgrades and three years of security updates. That does however fall short of what manufactuers like Google and Samsung have been offering. Samsung's mid-tier devices like the Galaxy A35 promise four years of operating system upgrades and five years of security, while Google is promising seven of both for the Pixel 8a.

You'll be able to get the HMD Skyline in a choice of black, pink, or blue.
