It's a truth universally acknowledged that NBN outages suck. Sometimes there's an issue in your home, sometimes there's an issue with the wider network. It can be hard to tell. But here are a few simple steps to follow if you think you might be experiencing an NBN outage.
NBN PRICE CHECK
Are you overpaying for your NBN?
Check your plan against the market average in seconds.*
Visit an NBN outage checker

If your NBN is down, the first thing you'll want to try to work out is whether the problem is isolated to you, or if there's a widespread outage. NBN Co has its own outage checker where you can type in your address and see if any NBN outages are affecting your address.
In other cases, a telco's network status page is your best bet for working out if you've got an NBN outage. Sometimes, NBN outages are isolated to an individual provider, rather than the entire NBN network.
If your internet is down, you'll need to visit your telco's network status page from a smartphone. You'll also need to disconnect your phone from your home WiFi in order to access your mobile data.
Here is a short list of network status pages for popular telcos:
Note that Vodafone doesn't have an NBN outage checker but you can check scheduled network maintenance for the provider's mobile network. Otherwise, you'd be better off using the NBN outage checker through NBN Co.
You can also check your telco's social media pages for further information.
While your telco's network status page is normally your best bet, telcos might not update them immediately as an outage happens. If you want to try and get an answer quickly, you can check Down Detector - a crowd-sourced website where users can make a report if they think they're experiencing an issue.
Down Detector is far from perfect - people often report individual problems as outages - but it tends to be quite accurate in the event of an actual outage due to the swell of users making reports. Down Detector tends to be best when it comes to major telcos like Telstra, Optus, Aussie Broadband, and TPG.
If you're experiencing an NBN outage, your only course of action is to wait until it's over. Nothing else will get you back online.
Internet options during an outage
If you need internet during the outage, your best option is to use your phone as a hotspot. Just make sure your mobile plan has enough data. It's probably best not to use your mobile data for overly demanding tasks like streaming video or downloading large software updates.
Alternatively, you can always visit a library to use public WiFi. If you don't have a library near you, a cafe could be a good alternative. Most McDonald's also have free public WiFi, but there are a few limitations. You'll have a 250MB download limit, and a 60-minute time limit. Your access will stop when you hit either. Weirdly, Anytime Fitness tends to be a good source of public WiFi, provided you're a member.
Lastly, over 3,000 Telstra payphones offer free WiFi. You can check if there are any in your area using Telstra's payphone locator tool. The catch here is you might not always have a convenient place to sit if you're using WiFi at Telstra payphone.
Restart your modem or router
If you've deduced your internet issues aren't being caused by NBN outages, there's a chance there could be an issue with your modem or router. We often hear jokes about "turning it off and on again" as being a catch-all tech fix, but in the case of modems, it can genuinely work.
Your modem synchronises with your NBN provider, and sometimes it can lose sync. Restarting it is a good way to force it to re-establish a connection. You'll want to keep your modem off for about 30 seconds before turning it back on.
It's also worth noting that you may need to restart your modem or router after an NBN outage to get back online.
Call tech support
If you've established there isn't an outage, tried restarting your modem or router, and don't have internet connectivity on any of your devices, there's a chance you're experiencing an issue that's isolated to your connection or property. In this case, your best bet is to get in touch with your telco directly.
Here's a short list of tech support numbers for popular providers:
- Telstra: 13 22 00
- Optus: 13 39 37
- iiNet: 13 22 58
- TPG: 13 14 23
- Aussie Broadband: 1300 880 905
- Dodo: 13 36 36
- Belong: 1300 235 664
- MATE: 13 14 13
- Tangerine: 1800 211 112
- Vodafone: 1300 650 410
- Kogan Internet: 1300 010 400
- Superloop: 1800 57 87 37
- SpinTel: 1300 303 375
- Swoop: 1300 66 55 75
If you're regularly experiencing NBN outages and your provider hasn't been able to address them, you may want to consider an NBN alternative like mobile broadband or 4G and 5G home wireless internet.
NBN plans with 4G backup
A small number of providers offer NBN plans with 4G backup. Essentially, if you ever lose connectivity to the NBN, the modems included with these plans connect to a mobile network to get you back online.
Currently, just Telstra and Optus offer plans with 4G backup. Here's how their plans compare on the NBN 500 speed tier:

Telstra and Optus have 4G backup as a standard feature on their plans, provided you opt for one that includes their bundled modem. You can read more about NBN plans with 4G backup here.
Change NBN providers
If you're consistently experiencing NBN outages and it isn't a problem with the National Broadband Network itself or the hardware in your house, it could be time to change providers. Almost every NBN plan is contract-free these days, so there's very little risk in changing provider if you're looking for a more reliable experience.
As part of its Measuring Broadband Australia reports, the ACCC tracks and reports outages that last over 30 seconds for 11 providers. Here's how providers featured in the report stacked up:
| Provider | % of households that experienced no outages |
|---|---|
| iiNet | 49% |
| Superloop | 43% |
| Aussie Broadband | 38% |
| Exetel | 41% |
| Dodo | 33% |
| iPrimus | 33% |
| TPG | 38% |
| Telstra | 59% |
| Optus | 61% |
| Leaptel | 64% |
The results for the December report come from a month-long testing period during September 2025 across a variety of NBN connections from a select number of households. These statistics are from a sample of over 1,000 NBN connections.

What happens to your NBN in a power outage or blackout?
Blackouts are another possible reason you might not be able to access your internet. In most cases, neither NBN internet services nor landline phone services will work if there is a power outage at your place or within the network itself. This includes 000 emergency calls.
However, note that restoring power to your premises with an alternative power source won't do anything if the NBN is also experiencing an outage in your area.
Customers on Fixed Wireless and Satellite NBN connections may be able to keep their existing copper phone line active when initially signing up to the NBN. If you've kept your copper active, you will still be able to make phone calls during an NBN or power outage provided your handset doesn't rely on mains power.
Customers with a Fibre to the Premises connection and a battery backup will also be able to make phone calls during a power failure. A battery backup unit will provide approximately five hours of power. Once again, you'll also need a handset that does not rely on mains power to be able to make a phone call.
All NBN customers should consider keeping a charged mobile phone at home in case of a power outage.
