Slow NBN plans are growing in popularity

Australians are opting for slower NBN plans according to the ACCC's latest NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report. 125,000 households made the switch to an NBN 25 plan in the quarter ending March 2023, which means the speed tier now represent 16% of the market.

NBN 50 is still the most popular speed tier, but 99,000 households moved off it during the quarter. While it would be surprising if many of these dropped to NBN 25, the ACCC says it also saw approximately 25,000 services added across NBN 250 and NBN 1000 speed tiers.

Given the current cost of living situation, it isn't surprising to see growth in the NBN 25 speed tier. A full-price NBN 25 plan can be had for as little as $60 per month, while a full-price NBN 50 plan sells for at least $75 per month. Promotional discounts can make both cheaper, however.

Here's a look at how NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans compare:

The Wholesale Market Indicators Report also showed the increasing growth of smaller NBN providers, with Aussie Broadband, Superloop, and Southern Phone the most popular. Smaller providers gain almost 52,000 subscribers during the quarter. Telstra, TPG, and Optus collectively lost 58,000 subscribers during the time.

Lastly, the number of active Sky Muster services declined by 6,000. There's a good chance these customers opted for an alternative like Starlink instead. The number of active Sky Muster services will likely continue to decline, thanks to upgrades that will allow those customers to migrate to Fixed Wireless NBN instead. NBN Co also recently launched a faster speed tier for Sky Muster customers that has unlimited data and can burst to speeds of 100Mbps.
