Optus' cheapest NBN plans are going up in price

Optus is increasing the price of its two cheapest NBN plans from July 6, following NBN Co's wholesale price changes. Optus' NBN 25 plan will go up by $4 per month, and its NBN 50 plan will go up by $2 per month.

Optus isn't changing the price of its NBN 100, NBN 500, or NBN 1000 plans.

Here's a look at the pricing changes for Optus' NBN plans:

Speed Tier	Old price	New price
NBN 25	$79 per month	$83 per month
NBN 50	$95 per month	$97 per month
NBN 100	$99 per month	N/A
NBN 500	$99 per month	N/A
NBN 1000	$129 per month	N/A

The new NBN plan prices will apply to new customers and existing customers from July 6, with existing customers being charged the new rate from their next payment cycle.

The wholesale price gap between NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans had already narrowed in recent years. NBN 500 plans, which were introduced last year, are typically priced the same as NBN 100 plans. These changes mean that there's only a $2 price difference from NBN 50 and either double or 10 times the speed.

Households need an HFC or FTTP connection type to get NBN 500 speeds and above. Most customers on the FTTN and FTTC technologies should be eligible for a free upgrade to an FTTP connection.

Why are NBN plans getting more expensive?

Each year, NBN Co adjusts wholesale pricing of NBN plans, and the changes come into effect from July 1. Telcos that sell the plans then typically adjust the prices they charge customers. Telstra, which announced its own price increases last week, is also only increasing prices on the cheapest speed tiers.

While a hit to the hip pocket, these annual price changes are an opportune time to review your household's internet bills. The majority of NBN providers offer introductory pricing, which usually lasts for six months and sometimes even a year.

Some providers have already started running their End of Financial Year sales with long-term deals. Most NBN plans are free from lock-in contracts, so you're free to jump from cheap plan to cheap plan every six months to keep your bill low.

While providers like Optus and Telstra have extra features like 4G backup modems or bundling discounts, they're usually the most expensive providers.

Both providers currently charge $99 per month ongoing pricing for NBN 100 and NBN 500 plans, but you can get the same plans from a provider like amaysim with a hefty six-month discount and an ongoing pricing of $80 per month.
