Optus' new NBN plans have a bundle discount for mobile customers

Optus has started the new financial year by refreshing its NBN offering with a simplified plan portfolio.

The biggest change benefits Optus mobile customers. Customers with a postpaid Optus mobile plan can save $15 per month on any Optus NBN plan for 12 months. These discounts increase with the number of plans on your account, up to a maximum discount of $45 per month with four services.

Optus has also stopped selling its "Entertainer" NBN plans that included a standard Netflix subscription at no additional cost. Instead, its two most expensive plans - a "Promo" NBN 100 plan and an NBN 1000 plan - include a $20 per month credit to go toward streaming services on Optus SubHub.

$20 per month is more than enough to cover the cost of Netflix Standard, but it also gives customers a bit more flexibility. They can pick from services like Amazon Prime, Paramount Plus, or Binge, instead.

Here are Optus' new NBN plans:

In addition, Optus has stopped selling an NBN 250 plan and has improved the terms around modem inclusions. Instead of being locked into a three-year term, customers have a shorter two-year term. If customers leave within their first 24 months, they'll pay $12.75 for each month left in the term. That still ends up being a maximum of $306, like when Optus had a three-year hardware lock-in.

Optus has also confirmed that customers on its new NBN 100 and NBN 1000 plans will automatically be upgraded to faster speeds in September, provided they're on FTTP or HFC technology types. NBN 100 customers will be moved to a plan with download speeds of 500Mbps, while NBN 1000 customers will benefit from upload speeds that double to 100Mbps.

While Optus' new NBN plans are simpler, they're still at the premium end of the market. For comparison, check out the cheapest NBN plans across each speed tier in the WhistleOut database:
