Origin NBN 1000 plans just got much faster, but how do they compare?

Origin Energy has updated its reported typical evening download speed of its NBN 1000 plan from 700Mbps to 811Mbps – adding faster downloads than a full NBN 100 plan to its existing product.

Upload speeds remained the same at 42Mbps out of a possible 50Mbps, though 42Mbps is among the fastest uploads reported in our database of 33 internet providers.

Here's Origin's NBN 1000 plan:

The speed upgrade means Origin NBN 1000 plans are some of the fastest around, but they’re still not the fastest. Swoop takes the top spot with a blistering 969Mbps – given 970Mbps is the fastest NBN 1000 plans can go for downloads, this is no mean feat.

AGL and Southern Phone are next with 860Mbps, while Origin NBN sits in equal fourth place alongside Superloop.

Pricing is a different matter, however. Below, we’ve ranked the NBN 1000 plans in our database by speed and by price, so you can see for yourself how Origin NBN compares:

While Origin’s asking price of $130 might seem steep compared to the equally-fast Superloop, those two prices can be brought a little closer.

Superloop’s plan is $99 per month to start, but increases to $109 after the first six months. This works out to a total of $1,248 over the first 12 months. Given NBN prices are set to rise again come next July, there’s not much point projecting further than this.

Origin’s plan is $130 per month with no intro discount, but you can get $10 off per month if you bundle your internet and energy bills. You also get 12 months of Paramount Plus (worth $83.88 in total) and 5000 Woolworths Everyday Rewards points. Woolies gives Rewards customers $10 off every 2000 points, so this is potentially worth $25.

Over the first 12 months, Origin’s plan pricing works out to $1,560. Assuming you’re an Origin Energy customer, were going to pay for Paramount Plus anyway, and are a Woolies Rewards customer, you could drop that total figure to $1331.12.

Ultimately, Superloop still comes out cheaper (in this scenario), but only by $83.12.

As for how Origin compares to faster NBN 1000 plans, their first-year costs are:

Swoop (969Mbps) – $1,548
Southern Phone (860Mbps) – $1,260
AGL (860Mbps) – $1,488. Note: AGL also offers bundle discounts for internet and energy ($40 off per month), but only for the first six months. Maximum bundle saving for internet is $240.

Origin and Superloop’s relationship

Origin and Superloop report the same NBN 1000 performance for one simple reason: Origin began migrating its NBN services to Superloop’s network this financial year, after signing a six-year agreement back in March. In essence, Origin is a Superloop reseller.

Superloop buys access to the NBN network, then Origin essentially pays Superloop to slap its brand on some of those services. There are of course other factors to selling NBN plans, such as customer support and billing, but as far as plan performance goes, this explains why they both report 811Mbps typical evening download speeds.

What’s in it for Origin? It gets to offer additional benefits for its energy plans, encouraging new customers to sign up and current ones to stick around. But it doesn’t have the same operation and maintenance overheads of fully independent NBN providers.

Prior to Superloop, Origin resold access to the Aussie Broadband NBN network.
