Telstra's NBN plans are pretty cheap right now (for Telstra)

Telstra has surprisingly deep discounts on most of its NBN plans at the moment, with savings starting at $30 per month on NBN 100 plans and up. This takes the starting price down to $69 per month, which is unusually low for a brand often known as Australia's most expensive telco.

Telstra has types of NBN plans: "Upfront" and "internet-only". The main difference is Upfront plans come with a modem and 4G backup, while internet-only plans don't, and as such, are a little cheaper. While Telstra will sell customers on internet-only plans a modem as an optional extra, it won't have 4G backup.

Discounts are a little smaller on Telstra's cheaper internet-only plans. Customers can save $30 per month on Telstra's NBN 100 and NBN 500 internet-only plans, or $40 per month on its NBN 750 and NBN 1000 internet-only plans.

As aforementioned, these discounts last for the first six months, after which customers will pay the full asking price. Telstra's NBN plans are contract-free, however, so one can always leave when the discount expires. Just note that if you're on an Upfront plan, you'll need to return your modem if you leave in your first 24 months. If you don't, you'll have to pay a non-return fee.

While Telstra's NBN plans typically sit at the top-end of the pricing spectrum, the introductory offer makes them a little more competitive. When it comes to NBN 500 plans, Telstra's internet-only option has made it into the top ten cheapest plans for the tier in the WhistleOut database, priced in line with SpinTel. Of course, SpinTel's plan jumps to $89.95 per month when the introductory offer is over, while Telstra's jumps to $99.
