The iPhone Duo is easily the flashiest part of Apple's 2026 line up, as the company's first foldable phone. Much like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8, the iPhone Ultra is a small passport-style device that unfolds to be roughly the same size as an iPad mini, with a similar aspect ratio. But while the shape may be similar, the iPhone Duo brings some innovations of its own, including a matte display and a redesigned take on iOS.

The iPhone Duo is available on mobile plans from Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone. All three providers offer the choice of 24-month and 36-month repayment terms. A 24-month term means you own your iPhone Duo faster, while a 36-month term brings down your monthly cost. Vodafone also offers 48-month plans for an even lower cost.

iPhone Duo features

iPhone Duo design

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable phone. It has a passport-like form factor when folded, with a 5.4-inch display. When unfolded, it becomes a 7.6-inch device, similar to an iPad mini.

As expected, the iPhone Duo leans on some Apple's learnings from the iPhone Air. When unfolded, it is just 5.2mm at its slimmest point, and it has the same kind of titanium frame. It is a bit heavier, at 254g, however.

The external display is protected with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, while the back uses standard Ceramic Shield. The internal display has a custom nano-texture finish to reduce glare and reflections, as well as minimise crease. Apple says it has a multi-layer laminated design to keep the screen flat. Notably, the iPhone Duo has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Both the iPhone Duo's screens will work with Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.

Apple has also redesigned iOS to better suit the iPhone Duo's foldable form factor. Essential controls are moved to the side, rather than sitting on the bottom, on both displays. The dock is also oriented vertically, and WiFi, coverage, and battery have been combined into a single icon. When unfolded, Apple's core apps can take advantage of the larger display, or alternatively, two apps can be run side-by-side.

The iPhone Duo is available in a choice of star white or night sky.

The iPhone Duo has a 48MP primary lens and a 48MP ultra-wide lens on the back, a 12MP selfie camera on the outer display, and an under-display "FaceTime" camera on the inner display.

Apple says the iPhone Duo can achieve 31 hours of video playback on the internal display or 44 on the external display. It also says you can get a full 24 hours of usage when using both screens equally.

iPhone Duo processor

The iPhone Duo is powered by the same A20 Pro chipset that you'll find in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple says the CPU is up to 20% faster when compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, and the GPU is up to 40% faster.

iPhone Duo eSIM

Australian models of the iPhone Duo don't take a physical SIM card; instead you'll need an eSIM.

eSIM (an electronic SIM or embedded SIM) is a rewritable SIM card that’s built directly into the phone. It never leaves your phone. Instead, you simply download a "software SIM" from your provider of choice.

Apple has been shipping phones with eSIM support since 2018, and telco support in Australia is pretty robust. Out of the all the mobile providers in WhistleOut's database, most now offer eSIM plans. You'll need a plan from one of these providers if you don't plan on buying your iPhone Air on a plan from Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone.

iPhone Duo 5G

The iPhone Duo naturally has 5G connectivity. WhistleOut's coverage checker tool has 5G coverage maps, making it easy to see whether you can get 5G. All you need to do is pop in your address when searching for a new phone plan. Telstra plans

Telstra iPhone plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, but they do come with a host of perks.

Telstra lets you pay your iPhone off over 12, 24, or 36 months, and all plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in SD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.

Telstra still has Australia's largest mobile network, covering over 2.14 million square kilometres. In addition, Telstra has a partnership with Starlink operator SpaceX, allowing you to send text messages and use select apps via satellite when mobile coverage is unavailable. A clear view of the sky is needed for this.

Telstra is the only telco in Australia to still have a rewards program. As a customer, you earn points for every dollar spent with Telstra, which can then be redeemed for discounts on new tech.

Optus iPhone plans come with solid data inclusions.

Higher-end Optus plans also come with unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan.

Vodafone iPhone plans may not come with the kinds of freebies and perks you can get from Optus or Telstra, but they have bonuses when it comes to bundling.

If you have a Vodafone mobile plan, you can get most of the telco's internet plans - NBN, 5G home internet, and 4G home internet - at a discounted rate.

Vodafone customers also save $5 per month if they bundle a second mobile plan on to their account, and then an extra $15 for each plan after.

Vodafone postpaid plans are all free from excess data charges. When you go over your plan allowance, you'll be capped at 2Mbps.

You'll also get access to Vodafone's famous $5 roaming, which is still easily the best way to travel with your Australian phone number.

Thanks to a network sharing agreement with Optus, Vodafone's network coverage is now practically identical to Optus' when it comes to 4G.
