3G shutdown days away: Last chance to check your tech

Mobile tower at dusk

The shutdown of Australia's 3G mobile networks is just days away, with an estimated 60,000 devices still in circulation that will soon not be able to make Triple Zero calls.

The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) is urging consumers to make final preparations before Telstra and Optus pull the plug.

Some 4G devices – those that don't support VoLTE (Voice over LTE) or those that use 3G to make Triple Zero calls – will also be affected.

To check if your mobile phone will work after the shutdown you can text "3" to the number "3498". You'll receive a response immediately about your device's compatibility. You can also check 3gclosure.com.

Because of the frequencies Australia's network uses, even some newer devices intended for use in overseas markets may also not work properly. People who have purchased a refurbished device or a device from overseas should also check to ensure compatibility.

Vodafone network customers aren't in the clear. While Vodafone shut down its own 3G network in January, its customers have been able to place Triple Zero calls via Telstra and Optus up till now.

It's not only mobile phones that will be affected by the closure of the 3G networks. Older technologies such as EFTPOS machines, medical monitors, security systems that use 3G and more may all be affected.

To see if these devices will be affected, you'll need to refer to the documentation provided or contact the manufacturer.

ACCAN CEO Carol Bennett said “All Australians must take this final opportunity to check their devices to ensure they remain connected and safe”.

Telstra has shed some light on what the shutdown will look like. It says it will be "progressive", but not a slow transition.

From 12.01am on October 28, Telstra will block all devices that can't call Triple Zero, in compliance with with new laws. It will then start to switch the 3G network off, starting in Tasmania before continuing through mainland states and territories. This process should be fully completed by November 4.
